Chelsea and England legend Frank Lampard might follow into his compatriot Steven Gerrard’s footsteps by taking the plunge into football management. The former Blues player was earlier linked with a move to Ipswich Town and now if the latest reports are to be believed, Derby County have put him on top of the list to bring him to their club.
Ever since his retirement, Lampard has entered into TV punditry. He is often seen on various channels giving his views and opinions about the game and players. It seems to be in fashion these days that every club wants a high profile manager at their club. Lampard doesn’t have a single managing and coaching experience behind him and this can turn out to be a risky move for the Rams.
Nevertheless, Derby County can take a punt on him after they lost their current manager Gary Rowett to Stoke City. The Potters were relegated from the English top flight and they seem to have been impressed with the work Rowett did with the Rams in one year.
Derby County had a decent outing in this year’s Championship as they managed to qualify for the playoff spot by finishing sixth. They were in with a good chance to reach the finals as they secured a narrow home win against Fulham in the first leg but the Cottagers overturned the 1-0 deficit and went on to win 2-0 to secure their place at Wembley for the finals.
According to reports, Lampard is keen to move on to football management and the Chelsea legend can be a successful manager and make good use of his footballing prowess. He was extremely hard working and what he lacked in talent he made up for it with his smartness and commitment.

However, this move can easily backfire for the Rams. Even Gerrard was the u-19 academy coach of Liverpool before he took on the job at Rangers and Lampard will probably do good if he grinds it out for a year or two at the youth level coaching before he jumps into the rat race of Championship football.
The Rams finished sixth this season and the fans would again be expecting a top 6 finish or even better next term, so that could mean more pressure on the inexperienced Lampard. Football management could be a different ball game as a certain Gary Neville found out and it won’t be easy for the former midfielder as well.
