Tottenham Hotspur has taken a newfound interest in Boca Juniors midfielder, Wilmar Barrios. The Columbian is expected to cost Spurs £25m despite falling under the radar of most European outfits. Mauricio Pochettino wants to beef up the squad ahead of the 2018/19 season to place an improved challenge for the league title and the European trophy.
The Argentine boss has been linked with quite a few clubs over the past couple of months, hinting at signs of unsettlement. It would not be a shock to see him quit White Hart Lane for better prospects as some of the European outfits are lining up managerial replacements.
Nevertheless, as long as he holds his post at the North London club, the work has to continue. Tottenham have been transformed over the past 4 seasons into one of the top Premier League clubs, capable of winning the title. They showed their prowess this season by tackling down the 4th spot away from Antonio Conte’s Chelsea and making a run deep into the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League.
Their only missing component has been squad depth which has proven to be crucial in holding the advantage over most opponents. Manchester City’s world-class squad racked with talents managed to dominate the domestic competitions due to a lack of any major injury this campaign.
Manchester United are also strengthening their squad by spreading stacks of cash around. It will take a lot of heavy investments along with the accumulation of top-pedigree talents to topple the big guns.
Pochettino is aware of that and yet two of his best midfielders are set to make a club exit. Victor Wanyama has struggled to carve out a starting spot due to his recurring injuries the last term and Mousa Dembele continues to get linked with a move away to China.
The latter, 30, is thought to be not at his physical best to carry out his midfield responsibilities day-in-day-out. Plus a move to the Far East will guarantee a sizeable paycheck, a nice way to head into retirement.
Losing both will leave a massive gap in the Spurs ranks and Barrios will have to take on major responsibilities. He has enjoyed a standout year with Boca Juniors, having appeared in 27 games and scoring once.
The 24-year-old knows how to hold down the fort from the central locations and is expected to take the centre stage for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
