Rangers FC boss, Steven Gerrard is expected to face some resistance from Brighton And Hove Albion for 25-year-old centre-back, Connor Goldson. The former England captain wants to strengthen the Gers defence ahead of the 2018/19 season and has pegged Goldson to be one of his top targets.
For a moment, the move almost makes sense from Goldson’s scarce involvement in the Albion first team. Shane Duffy and Lewis Dunk remain the uncontested starters under Chris Hughton with the 25-year-old only filling in as a rotational option.
No matter how important he might be as backup to the duo, Goldson is at a point in his career where he is prepared to take on a starting role. However, Brighton do not have anybody other than him as security with Uwe Hunemeier close to completing his move to Paderborn 07 this June.
With an injury-ridden Bruno Alves and a 20-year-old Ross McCrorie, Gerrard really needs a solid defensive head to take over the reigns at the back. Russell Martin has already returned to Norwich City after the completion of his loan spell and Fabio Cardoso is yet to prove his worth at the Ibrox.
It will take a lot for the team to break the Celtic dominance in the Scottish top-flight and finding an alternative option for Goldson looks to be ideal at the moment. Here are a few players Gerrard should consider.
Martin Skrtel
This one is obvious from the reports that have been flooding in for the past month. Skrtel is high on Gerrard’s wishlist and could make for a brilliant addition into the team.
The duo had been teammates for years at Anfield and the centre-back has over 300 appearances for Liverpool. Skrtel is the very definition of no-nonsense defending. At 33, he has years of top-flight experience and is capable of manning the Light Blues backline. He is currently serving out a contract with the Turkish side, Fenerbahce.
Lamine Kone
The 29-year-old is still up for grabs now that Sunderland has been relegated to the League One. Kone has struggled throughout the previous campaign with injuries but started to come into his own in the latter stages. He has played some valuable minutes and could solidify the Gers backline.

Tommie Hoban
Hoban has played 0 minutes for Watford this season and currently sits behind established names like Molla Wague, Sebastian Prodl, Christian Kabasele and Craig Cathcart in the pecking order. The 24-year-old could be pursued into a long-term deal given the conundrum he is stuck in at the Vicarage.
