Leeds United finished their campaign in an underwhelming 13th position. One expected much better from the Peacocks as they had a good start in the Championship and were seven games unbeaten at the start. However, their wheels came off and their Danish manager Thomas Christiansen was shown the door. They have started to rebuild under Paul Heckingbottom and have an important transfer window approaching as they will look to bring in reinforcements.
According to latest reports, the Peacocks are interested in signing Barnsley defender Andy Yiadom. The former Barnsley manager seems to be keen on reuniting with his former right back as the Whites have struggled with the fullback options in the season gone by.
Yiadom’s contract is set to end in the summer and Leeds can snap him up on a free transfer. The Whites failed to keep it tight at the back this season as they conceded 64 goals in their campaign. Any team who is vying for a playoff spot will agree to the fact that those numbers are just not good enough. It will be interesting to see whether Yiadom will be able to bring solidity in that backline for Paul Heckingbottom.
The signing of the Ghanian defender could be a warning sign for the likes of Vurnon Anita, Gaetano Berardi and Lewie Coyle who have underperformed in that right back role. Their January signing Laurens De Bock, who is a left back, was benched to accommodate Anita as the Belgium defender found it tough getting used to Championship. With a move for Yiadom, it could very well mean that Anita might continue filling in the role of left back for next season as well.
Yiadom has been regular this term for Barnsley as he has played 33 times for them and has provided three assists. A fullback in today’s day and age is not only a defensive option but he is also relied on to provide attacking output. The Ghanian is a willing runner and hard worker but sometimes his decision making in the final third lets him down.

One can understand why Heckingbottom is looking to reunite with his former player as he has seen him from close quarters and knows his strength and weaknesses. Apart from that this will be a very low-risk signing as his contract is expiring in the summer and he will be available for free.
