David Moyes’ contract at the London Stadium has come to an end after he guided his team to a victory in their final game. He managed to keep West Ham United in the top flight and secured a respectable 13th place in the final Premier League standings. However, it seems that the board is looking for a change as they might bring in a new manager for the next season.
According to reports, the Hammers have held talks with Paulo Fonseca who is the manager of Shakhtar Donetsk. It is being said that the Portuguese mastermind flew to England and had a meeting with the Hammers chairman, David Sullivan at his mansion. West Ham have been quick in approaching the Portuguese manager as they are wary of the fact that there will be other clubs as well who will look to have him at their disposal for the top job.
Fonseca’s reputation has been growing in the past few years as he has dominated the Ukranian League with his club. This year they managed to reach the Round of 16 of the Champions League as they made their way through a tough group which consisted the likes of Manchester City, Feyenoord and Napoli. He has been terrific in Ukraine and that led to him being awarded the manager of the year in his debut season when he delivered a treble with his team.
Fonseca and his team were unlucky to not go through further in the European competition as they were beaten by AS Roma on the away goal ruling. They certainly punched above their weight this season and that has made the Portuguese mastermind stocks go higher.
West Ham seems to be looking for a change as even a decent spell from David Moyes hasn’t landed him a permanent job at the club for next season. The Shakhtar manager is known to play more expansive and attractive football and is considered as one of the next big things in the football management.

He usually likes to go in with a 4-2-3-1 formation and keeps a high tempo while playing possession-based football. Under his stint in 2016/17 season, Shakhtar averaged 2.06 goals per game and conceded just 24 goals in their entire season. Those are impressive numbers and one can understand why some of the top clubs are vying to bring him in. West Ham will certainly benefit if they get him but it will be interesting to see whether he will be able to deliver the goods in the English Premier League.
