Portuguese news outlet, A Bola states that Everton have joined in on the race for William Carvalho’s transfer ahead of the 2018/19 campaign. Other European outfits like Inter Milan and Benfica have a strong claim of getting him too, now that Sporting Lisbon has lowered the player’s asking price of €45m to €40m.
Carvalho has expressed his wishes to quit the Portuguese outfit in order to almost double his earnings with any one of the interested sides. The Toffees might be able to provide that including the formidable transfer fee that has been put up by Sporting.
Despite failing to make anything significant out of the €200m they spent in the previous campaign, Farhad Moshiri has agreed to keep the money rolling. The Everton owner wants to see his club in the UEFA Champions League sometime in the near future and the best way of doing that would be to fatten the bank account.
It has certainly worked wonders for Manchester City and Chelsea over the past decade or so. Maybe ambitious planning like this and signing players of Carvalho’s calibre will be enough to place a significant challenge on the current top-six Premier League clubs, next season.
The 26-year-old defensive midfielder has certainly impressed plenty with his outings for Sporting and the Portuguese national team. Carvalho was key in Portugal’s 2016 Euro League triumph Sporting’s League Cup win in this campaign.
He has featured in 191 games for the Leões, 36 of those registered this season along with a goal and 2 assists to go along. The 26-year-old has spent the majority of his professional career in his home country outside of the season-long spell to Belgian outfit, Cercle Brugge.
He has developed into a fine midfield enforcer who is capable of solidifying a team’s midfielder. He is skilled at winning back possession and intercepting passes at the heart of the park. Carvalho can also initiate his team’s offence with his long and short range of passing.
He will be an ideal fit in the Everton starting lineup next to players like Tom Davies and Gylfi Sigurdsson. However, his arrival will definitely spark some competition with Morgan Schneiderlin and Idrissa Gueye.
Both of them play in a similar position as the Portuguese and performs the exact same role. Whether Carvalho is an immediate update remains to be seen. The man does not have any top-flight experience in England and is contracted to Sporting for another 2 seasons.
