With Steven Gerrard all set to take over as the new Rangers manager this summer, it won’t be a shock if he is already on the lookout for some quality players ahead of the upcoming summer transfer period. One of Scottish football’s most talented youngsters goes by the name of Oliver McBurnie, who has put in a number of impressive performances for Barnsley in the second half of this campaign.
The former Bradford City player is currently out on loan at Oakwell from Swansea City after failing to break into the Swans first-team earlier this season. However, he featured for the Swansea Under 23 side regularly in the Premier League 2, scoring 10 goals while grabbing one assist in 7 matches. In January, the Welsh outfit decided to send him out on loan to Barnsley for the remainder of this campaign.
He has turned out to be one of the club’s standout performers as he managed to bang in 9 goals in 17 appearances in the Skybet Championship but it wasn’t enough to save them from a relegation to League One. With McBurnie’s contract at the Liberty Stadium set to run out at the end of this season, the Gers should definitely try and persuade him to ply his trade at the Ibrox Stadium next term. He is exactly the kind of player who can flourish while playing football under the guidance of Steven Gerrard.
The Scottish wonderkid has already proven that he is ready to take up the goal-scoring duties in the Championship which means that he won’t have a problem doing the same in the Scottish top-flight. The Teddy Bears are in need of a proven goal-scorer ahead of the new campaign and will benefit from acquiring someone of McBurnie’s talents.
The 21-year-old is aerially a commanding presence which means that he will be an ideal target man on dead-ball situations. He also knows how to find the back of the net on a regular basis which the Gers could look to utilise next term. At the mere age of 21, McBurnie has already earned two international caps for the Scottish national team but is yet to register a goal for them.
