Wayne Rooney’s deal to MLS which seemed to be done and dusted a few days back has seen a new twist to the tale off late as the DC United boss confirmed that the deal is not yet done. According to various sources, the reports coming out earlier were that the English forward was bound to the American club after just staying one year with his boyhood club in his second stint.
DC United boss Ben Olson was asked about his new signing and he said,”I don’t know what you’re talking about.” However, he didn’t deny the fact that they are interested in having England forward and said,” Certainly the deal is not done but obviously, there is some interest from our end.”
Rooney has seen his career spiral down in the last few years and he seems way off his prime at the age of 32. After leaving Manchester United, it was expected that the one time poster boy of English Football will turn back the years at his boyhood club. However, there was no such fairytale and Rooney has struggled to get going at the Goodison Park. The signing of Cenk Tosun in the January transfer window has limited his game time to play up front and he has been largely used in the midfield by Sam Allardyce in the latter half of the season.
However, Rooney has still managed to be the highest goal scorer for them this season and has managed a tally of 11 goals in all competitions. His team started off poorly in the 2017-18 season under Ronald Koeman and Everton were hovering around the relegation zone. However, since Big Sam took over, he has slowly but steadily brought them to a comfortable position and has ensured a top half finish for them this season.
Everton will be looking to push for the European spot next season and they can certainly do with an experienced player like Rooney in their squad. However, it seems that Rooney will not be content with his bits and parts role at the Goodison as we have often seen him leave the pitch frustrated whenever he has been substituted midway way through the game.

It seems like Everton have made it clear to him that they wouldn’t be able to give him regular playing time as he hasn’t been cutting the mustard. That seems to have made Rooney’s mind up and look for other suitors. The Merseyside club will surely love to keep their childhood star at the club as he can provide a lot of output even when he is not on the pitch but it is clear that Rooney won’t be satisfied with a role of being a squad player and might have decided to move on to DC United.
