Bournemouth forward Jermain Defoe’s odds of joining Rangers this summer have been slashed. According to a United Kingdom bookmaker, there has been a series of bets coming in for the Cherries striker joining Steven Gerrard’s revolution at the Ibrox Stadium when the transfer window opens in the summer.
The former England international was previously priced at 7/1 to make a switch to Glasgow but his price has nosedived since the appointment of Gerrard as the new Rangers boss. Recent odds detect that Defoe will become a Ger this summer and is currently priced at 12/5. Some of the other players who are being tipped by the bookmakers to join the Teddy Bears include Martin Skrtel (6/4), Fernando Torres (7/1), and Daniel Sturridge (7/1).
In a recent interview, a Paddy Power spokesperson Lee Price addressed this new development and was quoted to have said, “Could Defoe become the Ger-main man on Ibrox? Surely, it would’ve been unthinkable a month ago – but, after the appointment of Steven Gerrard, anything seems possible for Rangers.
“Except for winning the Scottish Premiership. Obviously.”
The 35-year-old frontman signed for Eddie Howe’s side last summer. He has made 25 appearances in the league for the Cherries this season, scoring 4 goals in the process. Defoe might be heading towards the twilight of his career but he still knows how to find the back of the net and can flourish while playing football under his former England colleague, Steven Gerrard at Rangers next season.
The Gers currently find themselves at the 3rd spot in the Scottish Premiership standings with a tally of 69 points in 37 league matches. They are still in with a chance to snatch second place with a victory against Hibernian on Sunday.
The potential acquisition of Defoe will definitely bolster Gerrard’s attacking options ahead of the new campaign. Rangers have the likes of Alfredo Morelos, Kenny Miller, Jason Cummings, Jamie Murphy and Joe Doddo competing to lead the lines in their first-team. The addition of Defoe will undoubtedly improve their squad significantly and add more competition for places within Gerrard’s team.

At 35, the English forward still has a few years left in him to play at the top level which the Gers could look to utilise in the coming years. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Defoe and whether he ends up making a switch to the Ibrox Stadium this summer.
