George Honeyman is reportedly on the lists of a number of Championship clubs. Fulham are leading the race, followed closely by Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday.
The 23-year-old has enjoyed a profitable season, making him one of the most bankable players in the Sunderland squad. Honeyman has stood out from the rest of this teammates in their lost battle for Championship survival.
The Black Cats are set to play League One football next campaign, which would understandably drive out some of the big names. However, the club remains hesitant on selling any of their assets before Stewart Donald’s takeover has been confirmed. All debts have been cleared by the current management and are awaiting the confirmation from the EFL.
Honeyman is a graduate of the Sunderland academy, making his debut on 15 February 2015 in the FA Cup fifth round against Bradford. He appeared in 47 games this campaign and slotted the ball in 7 times. He also furthered 2 assists which evidently makes it his best season for the Black Cats senior team.
The attacking midfielder seems to have finally settled into his role in the first team and teams like Fulham and the rest will definitely profit heavily from the transfer. The player is versatile in attack and has a keen eye for the right pass. His sharp turns with the ball help him drift away from players to create space.
Standing at 5 feet 8 inches, he is quite agile and has a deft touch on the ball. Honeyman is capable of driving the team’s offence and is slowly coming into his own. Fulham have just lost the first game of the playoffs against Derby County. There is no guarantee to what the final race for promotion will deliver but the Cottagers remain adamant on restrengthening in the coming summer.
Their starting number 10, Tom Cairney is on the shortlist of multiple Premier League outfits. He could be on his way out of Craven Cottage even if the Lillywhites make it into the top-flight.
Whether Honeyman will be as impactful as the 26-year-old can be debated upon, but he can certainly fill in as a rotational option. The Englishman will have better players around him who will be able to make better use of his services.
