Newcastle United are looking to secure the services of Hannover 96 centre-forward Niclas Füllkrug this summer. According to recent reports, the Magpies are planning on making a move for the German striker when the transfer window opens in the summer.
However, the Tyneside club are not the only ones looking to snap up the Bundesliga ace with Leicester City and Watford also keeping tabs on the player. Some sources are claiming that Rafael Benitez’s side have shown an interest in Fullkrug after he put in a number of outstanding displays for Hannover 96 this season, but a lot could hinge on how much financial backing Benitez will be given at St. James Park this summer.
The 25-year-old forward has made 35 appearances for the Bundesliga team this season, scoring 15 goals while 3 assists in all competitions. He signed for Hannover from FC Nuremberg in the summer of 2016 and has been sensational for the German side during the course of this campaign. At 25, Fullkrug still has his peak years ahead of him which the Magpies could look to utilise in the coming years.
Benitez’s Tynesiders are currently occupying the 10th position in the league table with a home match against Chelsea looming on the horizon. Newcastle are in need of some new recruits this summer as they prepare to establish themselves in the English top-flight for years to come. It is no secret that the current Toon squad has struggled to score enough goals this season as evidenced by their record of 36 goals in 37 fixtures in the league so far.
The addition of Fullkrug will definitely bolster Newcastle’s attacking options ahead of the new season. The Magpies have the likes of Ayoze Perez, Islam Slimani, Dwight Gayle and Joselu vying for a place in Benitez’s starting eleven. The potential acquisition of Fullkrug will add more competition for places within their team and improve their squad depth significantly going into the upcoming campaign.

The German centre-forward is extremely versatile and can operate in a number of different positions across the frontline. Fullkrug can play on either wing or as a centre-forward up top which makes him a perfect fit for the Magpies. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of the Hannover talent and whether he ends up making a switch to St. Jame Park in the coming months.
