Celtic are currently holding negotiations with Paris Saint-Germain for the permanent signing of Odsonne Edouard in the coming summer. The 20-year-old has impressed Brendan Rodgers during his loan spell at Celtic Park and the former Liverpool head coach wants to keep him for a longer period of time.
Edouard was unfortunate enough to pick up a serious hamstring injury in the 3-1 win over Hearts last weekend. His season might just be over already with the Scottish Cup Final a distant possibility at the time.
Rodgers was quoted, “He’s struggling to play again this season. We hoped it was maybe cramp, but it’s looking worse than that, so it’s highly unlikely he’ll feature again. His contract is pretty clear. Peter has met PSG and talks are ongoing, so I’m hoping we can come to an agreement.”
“I know the boy is happy and PSG have enjoyed watching him develop here. It would be great if we could get this one done. He’s still here for his treatment. He enjoys being here and you never know, he might make a miraculous recovery for the final.”
Edouard produced 11 goals this campaign during his 29 appearances for the Hoops while also managing 4 assists. That is an impressive tally for a youngster whose daily involvement is either from the benches or from the inconsequential cup games.
Moussa Dembele still holds the candle for the starting XI spot, closely followed by the left-footed Leigh Griffiths. Rodgers has done well to rotate the trio and this, in turn, has accelerated the development of Edouard.
Competition breeds talent and the Frenchman has always looked to be playing with a chip on his shoulder. That hunger to prove his worth is always a positive sign and the Bhoys should be lucky to have him for another season.
After all, competing for major honours require a fully healthy team as well as remarkable squad depth. Celtic are poised to win their second consecutive treble – a record which has never been achieved in the Scottish top-flight.
Rodgers is certainly the one to draw all the praises mostly due to his impressive work at Glasgow over the past 2 seasons. He has put together an incredibly young squad to keep the team’s dominance in the Scottish top-flight alive.
