James Rodriguez has reportedly expressed his wishes to continue playing for Bayern Munich beyond this current season. The Bundesliga outfit have a €42m buy-back agreement in place with Real Madrid which they might implement after the 2017/18 campaign comes to an end.
The Columbian international certainly wants to make the switch since his involvement at the Spanish capital will be less than what he is accustomed to. Zinedine Zidane quite evidently prefers Isco over the 26-year-old, who was left out of crucial games in the double-winning 2016/17 campaign.
Rodriguez signed with the Galacticos for an eye-watering £71m fee in July 2014. His heroics in the 2014 FIFA World Cup made him one of the hottest South American talents and Florentino Perez was quick to acquire his services.
Rodriguez had a decent first couple of seasons at the Bernabeu, being handed over the number ten jersey and scoring 18 goals and assisting 17 in his debut season under Carlo Ancelotti. It all started to go down for him when the Italian got fired from his position and Zidane took over as head coach.
Despite being one of Rodriguez’s idol growing, Zidane could not find a starting spot for the attacking midfielder. Isco seemed to fit the Frenchman’s requirements much better due to his close control and creative abilities.
James Rodriguez is in no shape or form, a slouch in the playmaking department but his game can be characterised to be a bit different from that of Isco. The Columbian is more pacey and aggressive with his approach. He has a keen eye for goal and always looks to get into more scoring positions.
None of those traits is faulty or by any means unwanted. It just might not be what Zidane looks for in his creative heads.
Munich are definitely pleased to obtain the services of a player who fits into their system perfectly. Granted, Rodriguez did not quite hit the ground running right on his arrival but the latter half of the season was much kinder for him.
He has made 37 appearances this campaign while netting the ball on 8 occasions. He also set his teammates up 14 times to boost them to another league title, a DFB Pokal trophy and a Semi-Final run in the UEFA Champions League.

Bayern should definitely activate the clause they have in place and Real Madrid might just be happy to part ways with the 26-year-old. After all, the transfer fee might very well be reinvested in bringing in either Mohamed Salah or Neymar this summer.
