It is being reported that Barcelona are the latest club to join the race for Liverpool’s German star Emre Can. The central defensive midfielder is coming to the end of his contract at Liverpool and will be free to move to any club of his choice.
He will be having a plethora of options to choose from with Barcelona also now interested in him. Can is a combative and exciting midfielder who adds steel to the midfield. However, he is technically gifted as well and is more than useful on the ball.
Besides being able to pass the ball accurately and spread the game, the German has an incredible ability which has seen him score quite a few screamers in his Liverpool career. One such goal was good enough to win him the BBC Goal of The Season last year when he scored a wonderful volley against Watford.
The defensive midfielder signed for the Reds back in the summer of 2014 as a promising 20-year old. He has developed into a first-team star at Anfield but despite many efforts from Klopp might fail to keep him at Liverpool after this season.
Can is currently out injured and will have the entire summer to choose his next destination. As for Barcelona, the Catalan giants’ interest in him should not be considered surprising. Barcelona have a plethora of midfielders in Ivan Rakitic, Paulinho, Sergi Samper and Sergio Busquets.
However, Busquets despite all his brilliance is now ageing and will need to be replaced. The Samper experiment has failed for Barcelona while Paulinho and Rakitic are more of number 8s rather than the holding midfielder which Can is.
This would mean that next season, Barcelona would effectively have only one solid option at central defensive midfield, a situation which a giant club like the Catalans cannot afford to have. The present La Liga champions will need backups and reinforcements to continue their winning run in the next season as well and Can could prove to be an alluring option.

What makes the deal even more perfect is the fact that he will be available for free. In the current inflated market, getting a player of Can’s ability for free is something Barcelona cannot let go of and maybe a call from Coutinho might just convince him to board the plane to Camp Nou.
