Rafael Benitez was quick to send warning shots to the Newcastle United owners about his future at the club. The Spaniard has hinted upon leaving the side if Mike Ashley continues to act unbothered about the club’s transfer dealings. Reports claim that Leicester City have picked up on the news and is looking to bring in the former Liverpool coach as Claude Puel’s replacement.
While the Foxes might have improved upon their 12th place finish from the previous season, the French boss has failed to impress the fans at the King Power Stadium. The team registered their 5th loss in the last 6 league games and have slid down to the 9th spot on the points table.
West Ham United ran over them with 2 goals from Mark Noble and Joao Mario to cement themselves in the safety zone. Leicester’s woes continue to pile on under Puel and his departure is highly anticipated, after the final two games of the season.
The Magpies came all the way back from the relegation scraps to place themselves behind Leicester in the points table, all thanks to the brilliance of Benitez. The 58-year-old managed to grind out results after making just three crucial loan signings in the January window.
Clearly, his strategy and top-pedigree managerial skills have been key in bringing a seemingly weak Newcastle squad back up to the top-half to the table. The former Galactico boss has worked wonders with the team and should be given a massive long-term contract immediately.
However, making him agree to anything is hard with Ashley still holding the reigns at St James’ Park. The United owner has been highly reluctant to provide his head coach with any financial resources to work with.
If he continues to serve the club as per his own needs, it is highly likely that Benitez will quit the side for greener pastures. Leicester has not shied away from spending big in the recent transfer windows in hopes of returning to their former title-winning ways.
