Sunderland’s managerial seat remains empty after Chris Coleman’s departure earlier in the week. Recent reports state that the Black Cats are considering their former player, Kevin Phillips for the position. The 44-year-old is currently serving as assistant manager to Gary Rowett at Derby County and has 208 league appearances under his belt for the Rockerites.
Sunderland have just been relegated to the League One following a horrific season in the Championship. They registered only 6 wins under Coleman and will be ending the campaign at the very bottom of the league table.
A shame to see the side degrade to such lengths. Dropping down to the third division within a span of just two seasons will not sit well with the fans at the Stadium Of Light and immediate change has been demanded.
Obviously, the owners will have to take a more hands-on approach to the player and management recruitment process, providing the optimum financial support to Philips or whoever makes their way over to the Wearside outfit.
Ellis Short somehow could not manage to do so with the club losing value at a meteoric rate last season. However, reports claim that all debts have been cleared off the books and Donald Stewart is looking to place a bid for purchase.
He told BBC radio, “If the deal’s allowed to go through, it will be a spectacular one and a dream. I’ve had offers from other clubs and never taken them seriously. Sunderland is a different kettle of fish.”
He has also promised that he will bring in several investors along with him if the deal ends up going through. Despite the dark cloud hovering over the Stadium Of Light, things are looking up.
Philips will be entering a side who will be starting fresh after 141 years of its existence. A new project with lots of growth opportunities.
The loyalty aspect of it will also drive the 44-year-old in guiding the club back to England’s top-flight. His managerial career might not be as illustrious as some of the other professionals in his age bracket but the man has certainly picked up a thing or two during his time with the Rams.

His playing career is decorated with goals for over 11 teams in the country along with 8 caps for the England senior team. Sunderland’s woeful offensive efforts could also be corrected by the former attacker’s expertise in the field.
