On loan Rangers midfielder Carlos Pena has been suspended by his current club Cruz Azul after being found guilty of urinating in a fountain. According to recent reports, the 28-year-old Gers midfielder, who is currently out on loan at Cruz Azul has had his contract terminated, with many sources claiming ‘alcohol abuse’ as the cause for such a decision by the Mexican club. He has made just two appearances for the Mexican side and now, it looks like his future at Rangers could also be up in smokes, to say the least.
The £2m rated player sealed a move to the Ibrox Stadium last summer. However, following his failure to make an impact in the first half of the campaign, the Gers took a decision to send him back to his home nation in an effort to get the best out of him next season. Some sources are now claiming that the Scottish giants will now have to pay his £20,000 a week wages for the remainder of his two-year contract if he returns to the club.
Cruz Azul launched an investigation into Pena’s recent behaviour after he was spotted buying a six-pack of beer from a shop outside the club’s La Noria complex while still wearing his jersey. It is believed that the Mexican international did so right after he finished training with the club’s first-team. It was reported later on that Pena became abusive to staff at the team’s Royal Pedregal Hotel after he was caught urinating in the hotel’s water feature. His contract is due to be terminated on Sunday following the conclusion of the first half of this Liga MX season.
There have been recent reports suggesting that Pena might attend an alcohol rehabilitation programme before he returns to Scotland. In an interview last week, former Rangers manager and current Cruz Azul head coach, Pedro Caixinha addressed the media to talk about Pena’s situation and was quoted to have said, “Carlos should know that sometimes in life, people don’t get a chance like he has had…and certainly not two.
“So I have to decide what intervention to take with him. These range from a variety of fines or we can end his contract now.
“He is under contract until the end of the year, but in extreme cases, we can call it off and say to him ‘thank you Carlos and goodbye.'”

It looks increasingly likely that his career with both clubs could be well and truly over as his recent antics should not be tolerated at the professional level in world football. The 28-year-old midfielder has made 21 appearances this season, scoring 5 goals across all competitions. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Pena and whether he still gets a chance of reigniting his career with the Teddy Bears in the near future.
