Chelsea are interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur’s wantaway star Toby Alderweireld. The Belgian’s contract situation has seen a lot of stir created in the English media regarding his future at the club and now Tottenham could be set to lose their man. Toby Alderweireld has another year left on his contract with Spurs holding the option to extend it by another year. However, the deal twists itself with the extension as it allows the 29-year-old to activate his £25 million release clause at the end of his contract, a meagre amount in today’s inflated market.
This has seen Spurs left in a dilemma. To make matters worse for Daniel Levy, they have been unable to agree to a new deal for the Belgian centre-back meaning that things are now hanging by a thread. It will be interesting to see which party blinks first and whether Tottenham decide to cut their losses and sell the defender for a higher price this summer. The alternative would be to lose an uninterested player a year later on a lower price.
With the situation seemingly unbalanced, a host of English clubs have begun circling around the Spurs man. The clubs involved are the two big boys of Manchester and the Blues from West London. Chelsea are more or less set to miss out on Europe and will look to reshuffle their squad next season.
The Blues currently have a host of defenders in Cesar Azpilicueta, Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger, David Luiz and Gary Cahill. The case for Azpilicueta is simple; he is the best defender in the squad. As for Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger, they are both young and have performed exceptionally well this season. This would mean that the axe is likely to fall on Gary Cahill and David Luiz.
While Luiz has been frozen out by Conte, Cahill has simply not been up to the mark. The Brazilian might be able to return should Chelsea part ways with Conte next season but Cahill’s time at Chelsea looks all but over. The Blues will definitely be looking for a strong and better replacement and Alderweireld comes to the mind immediately.

The Belgian is an extremely composed, ball-playing defender who understands the logistics of playing in a three-man defence. He will provide better balls from the back besides organizing the backline. He will be a perfect fit on the left side of the back three and the Blues should definitely consider bringing him in next season.
