Chelsea are being linked with a move for Sporting CP wide man Gelson Martins this summer. According to recent reports, the Blues are looking to secure his signature this summer but could face stiff competition from the likes of Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham Hotspur in pursuit of the Portuguese midfielder’s signature at the end of the season.
It is believed that Chelsea are among a whole host of clubs who are monitoring his situation in Portugal and could be tempted to make an offer when the transfer window opens in the summer. Some sources are also claiming that the West London outfit have sent scouts to catch him in action when he laced up for Sporting CP to take on FC Porto this week. He put in an outstanding display during the contest and deservedly received the man of the match award.
Martins is currently hoping to be selected for Portugal’s 2018 FIFA World Cup which kicks off in Russia later this year. He graduated from the Sporting CP academy in 2015 and has become an integral member of the Portuguese outfit this season. It could turn out to be a shrewd piece of business for the Blues if they can secure Martins’ signature before the World Cup as his price is only going to increase if he performs well in the competition for his national team.
The Blues are currently lying in the 6th spot in the league rankings with a tally of 63 points after 34 fixtures in the top tier of English football this season. They have also managed to qualify for the final of the FA Cup and are now in with a wonderful chance to end their disappointing season with some silverware.
The addition of Martins will undoubtedly bolster Conte’s midfield options ahead of the new campaign. The West London team have the likes of N’Golo Kante, Cesc Fabregas, Ross Barkley, Danny Drinkwater and Tiémoué Bakayoko vying for a place in Conte’s starting eleven. The potential acquisition of Martins will definitely improve their squad depth and add more competition for places within the Chelsea first-team.
