Manchester United are set to hand Jesse Lingard a significant pay rise in the hopes of keeping him at the club for the long-run. According to recent reports, the Red Devils are preparing to offer him a new deal after he put in some sensational displays for the Old Trafford-based outfit during the course of this campaign. The England international has been one of Mourinho’s standout players this season which has also seen him book a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad ahead of the FIFA World Cup, which kicks off in Russia later this year.
It is believed that Lingard currently earns £85,000-a-week at Manchester after putting pen to paper on a four-year deal with the Reds of Manchester in the summer of 2017. Some sources are now claiming that United are prepared to increase his basic weekly wage in their efforts to keep him satisfied with life at Old Trafford. Lingard has featured in 44 matches for the Red Devils, scoring 13 goals and grabbing 7 assists in all competitions. Only Romelu Lukaku has scored more goals than him for Manchester United this season.
In a recent interview, Lingard was quoted to have said, “This has been my season, I don’t know what to put it down to.”
Mourinho’s men are currently lying in the second spot in the Premier League standings with a tally of 74 points in 34 league encounters. They have also managed to secure qualification into the final of the FA Cup following their 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.
Retaining some of their top players could go a long way in helping them close the gap to Manchester City in the coming seasons. In the long-run, they would benefit from keeping hold of Lingard’s talents going into the new campaign as he keeps on improving in a United shirt. The England international is extremely versatile and can operate in a number of different positions across the pitch. He primarily plays on the left flank but can also be deployed on the right flank or in the number 10 position which makes him an ideal asset for the Reds of Manchester.
