Latest reports claim that Leeds United are targeting Crusaders winger, Gavin Whyte as part of their summer transfer plans. The 22-year-old has been with the Northern Ireland outfit ever since he started playing the game and has racked up over 130 appearances for the club, 38 of them registered this season along with a goal-tally of 22. Not too shabby for a player who operates from the wings rather than the centre-forward position.
What started out to be an incredibly promising season for Leeds United is unfortunately set to end on an equally poor note. The Whites are coming off their 3rd win of the entire year and might just finish outside of the top 10 in the EFL Championship.
On closer inspection the centre of the problem partly lies in the recruitment process United have undertaken since the beginning of the campaign. They have decided to go with quantity rather than quality and have majorly prioritized players outside of Britain. Most have struck out and some are bound to be sold off in the next window.
In order to affect change, Andrea Radrizzani and his team need to take a more hands-on approach to the management structure and the players that are being brought in. Paul Heckingbottom has struggled to uplift the team spirits and get the team back to winning ways.
Thomas Christiansen seemed to have left behind an incompetent squad which needs massive restructuring in the summer. The striker position has been their most problematic with Pierre-Michel Lasogga managing only 10 goals in the entire season.
Caleb Ekuban’s injury has come as a tough break but the others have not stepped up to the occasions. Pawel Cibicki is not good enough to feature in the starting XI and Hadi Sacko is better suited on the wings.
A string of mishitting attackers will only take you so far in the race for promotion. Another less-than-mediocre season will not be entertained at Elland Road as the fans have already started calling for the head of Heckingbottom.
Gavin Whyte could hit the ground running right on his arrival judging by the form he currently is in. The Belfast-born winger has just been honoured with the Ulster Player Of The Year trophy. His incredible scoring record helped his team to the top of the league standings right on the final day of the season.
Leeds could acquire him for a relatively cheaper price. After all, semi-professional sides can only value their players so far.
