Celtic might have been the Scottish force that dominated the domestic football for seasons, there are a few other outfits as well who have drawn the attention in recent years following some lionhearted displays. The likes of Aberdeen and Rangers FC have maintained their presence in ‘top three’ similar to the previous term but Premiership this season has witnessed the mastery of newly promoted Hibernian, ‘giant-killer’ Kilmarnock and also minnows Motherwell who are now finalists of both the domestic Cup competitions defeating Rangers FC and Aberdeen in the process.
The Steelmen do not have the luxury to compete in the transfer market alongside the big guns of Scotland but lauded for their scouting network and the resources they nurture who usually move to a bigger club later on. Stephen Robinson, the Motherwell boss, is also aware of his side’s ‘selling club’ status but now determined to let his prized assets leave only for ‘top dollar’.
“When you have 4000 fans you will always be a selling club, but it is on our terms.”
A strong statement from the gaffer signifies the latest interests in his side’s top-notch names – most notably Cédric Kipré who is being chased by MLS outfit Vancouver Whitecaps.
Kipré, 21, was acquired in summer following a successful trial after being released by former English champions Leicester City. The Cote d’Ivoire U23 international soon secured the first-team status following some towering display during pre-season and earned an initial one-year contract last summer. He then extended his stay for further one year upon penning a new deal back in August and once again accepted new terms last week as the club now hold a stronger stance by tying him down until the summer of 2020.
The 6 ft 3 in centre-back will have an array of admirers and the quotes of Robinson must alert Celtic to make a move for the young sensation. They are capable of splashing the cash on Kipré who will be a massive recruit for years to come. Brendan Rodgers, the Hoops boss, is known for developing youngsters and transforming them into the top names of the league. Teenager Kristoffer Ajer is one such instance who has been a revelation at the back as he has earned the manager’s trust by grabbing the opportunities and is now being targeted by multiple top outfits of European football. 22-year-old Jack Hendry, the winter recruit from Dundee, holds a place in the Northern Irishman’s plans next season but the future of Marvin Compper and Jozo Simunovic seem to be in real doubt as neither of them has been preferred by the gaffer of late.
Dedryck Boyata, the Belgian international, has been the preferred central defensive option alongside Ajer but there has been confusion regarding his Celtic future. He has refused to commit his long-term future and might be offloaded in summer in order to avoid a Bosman transfer next year. Kipré, therefore, should be viewed as his direct replacement as the Ivorian will not only offer his Premiership experience and defensive resilience but also a promising future under the sincere guidance of Brendan Rodgers.
