Aston Villa centre-back John Terry could be weighing up his options as a player if Villa can secure a promotion back to the Premier League at the end of this season. The West Midlands side are currently in the 4th position in the English Championship rankings with a tally of 79 points in 43 league matches. The Villans are well in contention to clinch a playoff place and the defensive contributions of Terry have been one of the main reasons behind their great form in the league.
The 37-year-old centre-back has featured in 33 matches for Villa this season, scoring one goal in all competitions. However, at 37, Terry knows that he is in the twilight of his career and might consider retiring at the end of this season. The English defender has 71 international caps and six goals to his name for the England national team.
With Terry set to consider retirement at the end of this campaign, let’s take a look at three potential replacements for the Villans to consider in the off-season.
Ben Mee
The Burnley defensive ace has put in some impressive displays at the back for Sean Dyche’s team during the course of this Premier League campaign. He will be an ideal replacement for Terry and could turn out to a shrewd signing if the Villans can pull off such a deal. The 28-year-old has featured in 30 matches for the Clarets in this campaign and has been a key figure in his team’s climb to the 7th position in the league rankings.
Jonny Evans
The Baggies centre-back has improved his game at the Hawthorns following his departure from Manchester. The Villans can offer him regular first-team football at Villa Park if Terry decides to hang up his boots in the summer, which might be enough to convince him to join Steve Bruce’s revolution at the West Midlands.
The Northern Ireland international has a wealth of experience at the highest level having featured in 233 matches in the top tier of English football which makes a perfect fit for Villa.
David Abraham
The Argentine defensive ace has been a rock at the backline for Eintracht Frankfurt this season and his solid displays have helped his side climb to the 7th position in the Bundesliga rankings. They are still in with a chance of earning a Champions League place for next season which has mainly been down to Abraham’s defensive contributions.
The 31-year-old centre-back has made 25 appearances for Frankfurt in all competitions and will be a great fit for Aston Villa as they look to improve on their league performance next term.
