According to recent reports, Anthony Martial would favour a move to Arsenal rather than leaving the Premier League for good. His future with Manchester United is up in the skies after undergoing a season with scanty minutes under Jose Mourinho.
The Portuguese tactician would not oppose the move either if he could bring in a replacement of his choice like Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale. United have been linked with the Welshman since the January window and might just be lining up a convincing offer for the summer.
Martial’s involvement with the Red Devils have significantly diminished since his debut season at Old Trafford. At first, he was the uncontested number nine under Louis Van Gaal and was lighting up the Premier League with his impressive scoring abilities.
However, right when Zlatan Ibrahimovic made his way over from Paris Saint-Germain to Manchester, the 22-year-old got shifted out to a more wing role than his preferable striker position.
And now, Romelu Lukaku is the starting forward with Alexis Sanchez on the flanks and Marcus Rashford as the rotational option. Mourinho did field the latter in a similar fashion as Martial but it looks like the Frenchman will be one to make a club exit. This also stems from the fact that Rashford is younger and is a product of the United academy.
However, it awaits to be seen whether Mourinho will sell one of Premier League’s most talented youngsters to a rival club like Arsenal. He was already very opinionated when Petr Cech was sold off to Chelsea when he was still holding the reigns at Stamford Bridge.
The Gunners might have to pay big for the versatile attacker and going by the present market conditions, breaking their own transfer record big. Arsene Wenger has already invested £60m on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the winter and £52m on Alexandre Lacazette ahead of the 2017/18 season.
He does need a pacey wideman to spread the floor for his attacking side. Ever since Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott quit the North London club, Wenger has been short staffed in the wing department.
This begs the question whether Martial would agree to the role. All signs indicate yes.
He has shown us his abilities with the ball from the wide areas and his versatility in the final third. Plus the French connection is almost notorious at Emirates squad ranks with Wenger at the helm and Lacazette in the front line.
