Newcastle United had an excellent season last year. They had been relegated to the Sky Bet Championships and were away from the top tier of English football. However, appointing Rafa Benitez helped the team get better as they experienced former Liverpool boss guided the Magpies to the top of the Championship table.
They were excellent in the second tier and went all the way to win the title. They ended up returning to the Premier League and things have not been the same way since. Coming back to the Premier League always means finding it hard to find one’s feet.
This would mean that buying new players, getting rid of the ones who are not good enough and preparing the club for a fresh challenge. This would mean that they would need to spend money and build the club again. However, club owner Mike Ashley made everything not only difficult but also impossible by refusing to spend a penny on them.
He refused to help Benitez after the Spaniard clearly mentioned in the press that they needed to get rid of old players and buy new ones. Not only did it make it difficult to buy new stars, it also meant that other clubs new that Benitez was willing to sell and therefore they were unwilling to pay a good amount for any Newcastle player.
Such a precarious position put them in a tough pickle and Newcastle were stuck. Benitez’s team made a difficult start but went on a decent winning run before collapsing again. They were once again up and the wave continued as the season progressed.
They have struggled throughout but have managed to stay afloat. Benitez has pulled all the trick out of his book and Newcastle might be able to survive this season in the league. However, even if that does happen, they will need reinforcements next season.
