Liverpool are planning to make a surprise move for FC Porto goalkeeper Iker Casillas this summer. According to recent reports, the FC Porto keeper will be available on a free transfer at the end of this season. The Spanish shot-stopper’s contract with the Portuguese giants runs out in the summer when the Reds could look to secure his services. Casillas is keen on a move to English football and is confident about his chances of playing in the Premier League.
The former Real Madrid keeper was given a standing ovation by the Reds supporters when Liverpool faced off against Porto at Anfield in their Champions League last-16 second leg clash, a few weeks ago. The 36-year-old conveyed his gratitude by making a post on social media after the match. His post contained a picture of him with the Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp embracing each other with the following caption: “Respect Champions League. Never walk alone.”
The Reds were recently touted to make an offer for AS Roma’s Alisson but some sources are now claiming that Klopp is ready to turn his attention elsewhere in search of a new keeper. Casillas signed for FC Porto in the summer of 2015 and has featured in 25 matches for the Portuguese outfit this season, conceding just 16 goals while keeping 15 clean sheets.
The Merseysiders are currently sitting in the 3rd position in the Premier League rankings after their hard-fought 0-0 draw versus Everton on Saturday. Jurgen Klopp’s side will now be preparing for their crucial UEFA Champions League quarter-final second-leg clash versus Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night.
The addition of Casillas will undoubtedly bolster Jurgen Klopp’s goalkeeping options ahead of the new campaign. The Reds’ goalkeeping duo of Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius has conceded 35 goals in 33 Premier League matches. The potential signing of Casillas might be a significant upgrade over the pair as they look to mount a title challenge in the next campaign.

The FC Porto keeper was the captain of the Spanish national team when they managed to be the 2010 FIFA World Cup champions and has also won two European Championships in 2008 and 2012 respectively. He is also a three-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid and has five La Liga titles to his name as well along with other major honours. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Casillas and whether he ends up making a switch to Anfield in the near future.
