Liverpool made a short journey across Stanley Park to take on Everton at Goodison Park as part of the lunch-time kickoff in the Premier League on Saturday. Jurgen Klopp decided to make some changes with a crucial second leg versus Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League looming on the horizon. The Reds began the match on the front foot with the Toffees sitting back and trying to hit them in the counter. Both teams tried their best but couldn’t conjure up a goal in the first-half.
The second half began with both teams trying to get a foothold in the game but they failed to find any kind of spark in the final third. The Toffees tried their best to find a winning goal in the last quarter of the game but they squandered a few great opportunities to hand Liverpool a point from the contest. Everton’s efforts to register a derby win fizzled out as the match finished 0-0 with both teams sharing the spoils.
Let’s take a look at how each Liverpool player performed in the derby.
GK: Loris Karius – 8/10
The German made a world-class save in the first half when he denied Yannick Bolasie’s goal-bound shot. He didn’t have much to do in the second half as Everton failed to test him.
RB: Nathaniel Clyne – 7/10
He had a good game for the Reds after a long injury lay-off. He managed to provide an outlet for Liverpool down the right flank and looked composed when facing his own goal.
CB: Dejan Lovren – 7/10
Another strong performance from the Croatian international at the heart of the Liverpool defence.
CB: Virgil van Dijk – 7/10
He organised the Reds backline well and kept a deserved clean sheet on the day.
LB: Ragnar Klavan – 6/10
The veteran defender slotted in well as a makeshift left-back and did enough to help his team get a result.
CM: Georginio Wijnaldum – 7.5/10
He was arguably Liverpool’s best player in the first half but his performance faded as the game went on.
CM: Jordan Henderson – 6.5/10
He looked assured in the Reds midfield and led his team to a comfortable draw in the derby.
LM: James Milner – 7/10
Another tireless shift by the English midfielder at the centre of the park, he made some great runs behind the Toffees defence and was unlucky not to create something meaningful in the final third.
CAM: Sadio Mané – 6/10
The Senegalese looked tired and failed to be effective in the opposition half.
ST: Danny Ings – 6.5/10
He put in a hardworking display but wasn’t able to make an impact in front of the Everton goal.
ST: Dominic Solanke – 5.5/10
He tried too hard at times and squandered two great opportunities in the first half.
Substitutes:
CM: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – 7/10
He came off the bench to make a great run in the opposition half. However, his resulting shot failed to test Pickford in the Toffees’ goal.
ST: Roberto Firmino – 6/10
The Brazilian failed to make an impact in the game.
RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold – N/A
The young defender hardly had any time to have an influence in the game.
