Liverpool are looking to secure the services of Barcelona goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen next summer. According to recent reports, the Reds are ready to make a swoop for his signature this summer as they look to bring in a new goalkeeper ahead of the new campaign. The Dutch keeper signed for the Catalans in the summer of 2016 from AFC Ajax after impressing in the Dutch Eredivisie.
Both Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius has failed to perform consistently in goal for the Merseyside outfit which is why Jurgen Klopp’s side are in need to bring in a quality goalkeeper in the summer. It is expected that Liverpool will part ways with Mignolet at the end of the season but the future of Karius is still up in smokes.
Klopp could choose to bring Cillessen into Merseyside to add more competition for places in his squad. He has only featured in cup competitions for Barcelona during the course of this season and has notched up with 9 appearances in all competitions, shipping in just 2 goals while keeping seven clean sheets. Anfield could be a lucrative option for the Dutch keeper with Liverpool almost guaranteed a place in next season’s Champions League.
The Redmen of Merseyside are currently sitting in the 3rd position in the Premier League rankings after securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory away at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace in the last gameweek. The Merseyside outfit also has one foot in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League following their 3-0 first leg victory over Manchester City on Wednesday night.
The addition of Cillessen will undoubtedly bolster Jurgen Klopp’s goalkeeping options ahead of the new season. The five-time European champions have the likes of Simon Mignolet, Loris Karius and Danny Ward vying for a place in the Reds first-team. The potential signing of Cillessen will definitely improve Liverpool’s squad depth as they look to mount a realistic title challenge next term.

At 28, the Dutch keeper still has his peak years ahead of him which the Reds could look to capitalise on in the coming years. However, he is still unproven in the Premier League and could need time to adapt his game to the physicality and high intensity of English football which will be a cause for concern. Only time will tell what lies ahead in the future of Cillessen and whether he ends up making a switch to Anfield in the near future.
