Tottenham Hotspur fans are ready to see things get even better for the club. Their recent 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge over London rivals and 4th spot challengers Chelsea put them in a position to comfortably see off the Blues for next seasons’ final Champions League ticket. It is now being reported that the club is preparing new deals for several important members. Mauricio Pochettino along with Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Son Heung-Min, Hugo Lloris and Jan Vertonghen are all set to be offered new deals to stay at the club.
The situation for Tottenham’s backline is very interesting. Spurs have a solid backline with options like Toby Alderweireld, Eric Dier, Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez all fighting for spots. However, if we were to be able to delve a little deeper into the London side’s situation of the story, we would find several cracks in the team.
Alderweireld’s current situation at the North London club is far from settled. He has a complicated situation with his contract which will expire shortly and with the player demanding a ridiculous wage that the club will never agree to, Daniel Levy might be forced to part ways with the Belgian defender sooner rather than later by selling him for maximum profits. The longer he stays on, the worse they will get paid for him and there is no need to keep an unwilling player in the team who will bring down the team’s morale.
As for their English option in defence, Eric Dier, he is a makeshift centre-back who would always prefer to play as a holding midfielder instead. Therefore, Pochettino cannot depend on him for very long and would have to soon replace him with a regular centre-back in the team so Dier can play in midfield again.
Davinson Sanchez is new to the league. He has had an excellent start to his English league career but he will need time to settle in. The full throttle of a long season will get to him and he needs rest and backup when such a situation arises. This would mean that for Spurs it is absolutely essential that they have a leader and an experienced player at the back in the form of Vertonghen.
The Belgian is soon to turn 31 but has plenty of game left in his stock. He can play as a centre back as well as a left-back depending on his club’s needs. He is the leader at the back who can marshall the defence very well having played for the club for so long. Hence, Spurs should ensure that they wrap up his deal as soon as possible.
