Liverpool are planning to make a swoop for Cagliari midfielder Nicolo Barella next summer. According to recent reports, the Reds are ready to step up their pursuit of the 21-year-old midfielder’s signature. However, they will face stiff competition from the likes of Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund on the hunt for the Italian’s services.
Barella has put in some dazzling displays in the Serie A this season and is now set for a big-money switch out of Cagliari this summer. His performances have caught the eyes of some of Europe’s most elite clubs but Liverpool remains adamant about their chances of landing the player in the off-season. Some sources have also claimed that the Italian youngster favours a move to Inter Milan but it seems like the Merseyside outfit are willing to give up without a fight.
The Serie A giants are still in pole position to bring the Italian to the San Siro but they will be joined by Jurgen Klopp’s side and Borussia Dortmund in the chase for his signature this summer.
The Merseysiders are currently in the third position in the Premier League table following their hard-fought, come-from-behind victory at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace on Saturday. Jurgen Klopp is now preparing his side for a crucial UEFA Champions League home tie versus Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City on Wednesday night.
The addition of Barella will undoubtedly bolster Klopp’s midfield options ahead of the new campaign as they look to mount a title challenge next season. The Reds have the likes of Emre Can, Jordan Henderson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Georginio Wijnaldum and James Milner vying for a place in Klopp’s first-team with the impending arrival of Naby Keita next summer. The potential signing of the Italian will definitely add more competition for places in the Reds squad.

Barella has featured in 28 matches for Cagliari this season, scoring six goals in all competitions. Jurgen Klopp has built a reputation of giving some of his talented young players a chance if they are good enough as evidenced by the recent emergence of players such as Trent Alexander-Arnold, Joe Gomez and Andrew Robertson. Hence, Anfield could turn out to be an ideal destination for Barella to grow and develop his game which could help him take the next step in his career. Only time will tell what lies ahead in the future of Barella and whether he ends up making a switch to Merseyside in the near future.
