Brighton suffered a 2-0 defeat to Leicester City at The Amex. Goals from Vincent Iborra in the 82nd minute and a stoppage-time strike from Jamie Vardy secured three points for the visitors. The Foxes were reduced to ten men when Wilfred Ndidi was sent off late on after picking up a second booking for a foul on Shane Duffy.
Below are the lessons that Brighton can learn from the defeat at home against The Foxes:
Take your chances
Brighton dominated the game but failed to take any of their chances. Glenn Murray had three chances, one of which a penalty which was saved by Kasper Schmeichel and a long-range effort which Schmeichel saw just go over the bar. Pascal Gross also had an effort from outside the box well saved by the Leicester keeper. However, Brighton failed to take any of their chances and paid the price for it.
A better final ball
The Seagulls may well have scored if they had decided to play the right final ball. A couple of chances stuck out. The first was when Jose Izquierdo got in behind the Leicester defence and instead of cutting it back to both Murray and Gross, who were unmarked he decided to cut inside and shoot which was the much more difficult option.
The other was when Murray got in behind the defence and got into the box and turned back and then tried to pick out a blue and white shirt on the edge of the box and instead gave the ball away by passing it straight to a Leicester player. There were also many chances to get the ball in the box, but the standard of the crosses was not good enough with a great deal of them struggling to get past the first man.
Leicester tough enough to break down
To be fair to the home side, Leicester were a tough side to break down. Both of Leicester’s centre-halves, Wes Morgan and Harry Maguire sat so deep throughout the game it made it difficult for Brighton to get in behind them. At times the visitors sat with two solid banks of four and made it extremely difficult to make space and create an abundance of chances. This also worked well for the visitors as when they got the ball they were putting it into the path of Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and Marc Albrighton to try and counter with pace and this was shown in both of their goals.
Brighton now face a game against Huddersfield next Saturday at The Amex where they will hope to bounce back and get the three points needed to try and increase their chances of Premier League safety.
