Celtic’s current number one goalkeeper, Scott Bain has revealed his wishes to sign a permanent deal with the club after this season. The 26-year-old told the press, “I would love to be here. I’ve loved every minute of being at this club and the fans have been fantastic with me. Here I can reach my potential with the staff and the players you train with every day. Because of the age, I am it’s going to be a big move for me in terms of my career. I would like it to be here as this club has got everything for me to improve.”
Bain arrived at Glasgow on transfer deadline of the January window and signed a six-month loan spell with the Hoops.
He is Brendan Rodgers’ saving grace this season after the former Liverpool boss saw his first choice keeper go down to a knee injury against ironically, Hibernian themselves, on 27th January.
Craig Gordon was ruled out for almost twelve weeks and just recently has returned to training with the team. Rodgers was left with Dorus De Vries as a second option and an inexperienced Ross Doohan.
The entire irony rose from Rodgers’ decision to send Conor Hazard out on loan to Scottish Championship side, Falkirk less than a week ahead of the injury. The manager sanctioned the move in hopes of getting the youngster some first team experience. What could have been if the injury had either occurred earlier or the switch was delayed for a bit longer!
However, now even Hazard’s future with Celtic seems to be in trouble as Bain has openly expressed his intentions. Whether Rodgers will go ahead with the option is yet to be seen.
The player’s contract with Dundee United will run out after this season and the Premiership leaders will have the option of signing him up for free.
Their season took a huge boost after the 2-3 away win over bitter rivals, Rangers FC earlier this month. With a 10-point lead at the summit, the league title seems to be theirs for the taking and further plans are already being drawn up for the 2018/19 campaign.
This one will mark to be their 7th consecutive league title and showcase the utter dominance they have enjoyed in Scotland throughout their existence. However, the time is not now to get complacent.
Rodgers is expected to choose Gordon as soon as he returns from injury but the Scotsman is also facing the tail-end of his playing career. At 35, he might be holding up to Celtic’s standards but replacements need to be prepared beforehand. The entire future of Bain will depend on the manager’s stance on Connor Hazard.
