Jonny Evans has been at the heart of transfer speculation all winter and according to recent reports, his future with West Brom is still uncertain. Tottenham Hotspur have recently taken an interest in the 30-year-old who was close to a move to the Emirates earlier in the season.
Evans’ talents have been overseen by the footballing world for the majority of his career but the last few seasons with the Baggies have been different. The Northern Ireland international is the club’s captain and is a first-team regular with 28 total appearances this season.
All over he has appeared in 93 games for Albion and has scored 5 goals. He has been the best defensive element in the West Brom lineup despite the side falling to the relegation spot in the current campaign.
We could only witness the best out Jonny Evans when Alex Ferguson was at the helm at Manchester United. The retired Scotsman fielded Evans in the centre back role ahead of a lot of talented options and have won three league titles with him.
Evans was always the dark horse in the massive United talent pool but was an esteemed professional. We have seen it get carried over to the Hawthorns and will always come to great use for any Premier League side.
Tottenham Hotspur are in danger of losing Toby Alderweireld next summer and Evans could be an able replacement. While Mauricio Pochettino always favours young talent within the squad, even he knows that Alderweireld’s departure will leave a huge gap in the Spurs backline.
The amount of composure and experience the Belgian brings to the side will be severely missed and a title-challenge is always hard without a solid centre-back pairing.
Pochettino came to terms with his side’s shallow squad depth earlier in the season when competing for both European and domestic competitions became overwhelming for the players. The North London side dropped crucial points in the League while trying to uptake Real Madrid in the group stages.
Granted their Champions League performances were impressive and they did win the top seed ahead of the Galacticos but their competence for the Premier League title has been far from impressive.
They are currently in the top-four but are facing heavy competition from Liverpool and Chelsea. The FA Cup final is a far stretched possibility with Manchester United failing in their way.
Pochettino is eager to build on the progress they have made so far and Evans can be the perfect rotational centre-back.
