Newcastle United are set to offer a professional contract to their young full-back, Adam Wilson. According to recent reports, the Magpies are eager to retain the services of the England Under-18 left-back ahead of the new campaign. The 17-year-old youngster has put in some eye-catching displays while playing for the club’s Under-23 side and it is believed that the Tyneside club will hand him a two-year deal as they look to overhaul their development team when the summer transfer window opens at the end of the season.
Wilson was recently called up to the England Under-18 squad for their crucial friendly matches which will take place at St George’s Park during the course of this international break. He is highly versatile and primarily operates in the left-back position. However, he can be deployed in a more advanced role in midfield which makes him an ideal asset for the Magpies.
The teenage starlet signed schoolboy terms with the Tyneside outfit in 2016 and has gone on to impress with some dazzling displays for the club since then. Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez has recently stated his desire to make use of his second string and academy players once their Premier League lives are secured for another season. In a recent interview, Benitez was quoted to have said, “If you can bring players from the Academy that can guarantee some passion, better ways, and to save money from a transfer fee.
“It’s really important to do that.”
The manager’s comments will come as a big boost for young players like Wilson who could look to make a breakthrough into Benitez’s senior team in the near future.
The Tyneside club are currently sitting in the 13th position in the Premier League standings with a tally of 32 points in 30 league matches. Rafael Benitez’s team find themselves just four points above the drop zone and are in serious danger of being demoted to the Skybet Championship at the end of the campaign. They are in dire need to bring in some reinforcements during the summer transfer window which will help them in their quest to push on and improve their league performance next season.
Retaining some of their top talents could also help the club as they look to build for a bigger and better future in the top tier of English football. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Wilson and whether the Magpies are successful in keeping hold of his services for the coming years.
