Manchester United are being linked with a move to re-sign their former centre-back, Jonny Evans, this summer. According to recent reports, the Red Devils could look to make a move for the West Bromwich Albion defender when the summer transfer window opens at the end of the season.
It is understood that Evans has a clause in his contract which will allow him to depart for a meagre fee of £3m if the Baggies are relegated this season. However, the Old Trafford-based are not the only ones considering a move for Evans with Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur also keeping tabs on his situation at the Hawthorns. It is highly likely that the Alan Pardew’s side will be relegated to the English Championship this term and so they could be forced to part ways with some of their big-earning players in the off-season.
The Northern Ireland international has featured in 28 matches for the Baggies in all competitions and has scored two goals so far in this campaign. He signed for the West Midlands outfit in the summer of 2015 from Manchester United and now, a return to Old Trafford might just be on the cards!
United are stamping their authority sitting in the second place in the Premier League table with a tally of 65 points in 30 league matches. In any other decade, Jose Mourinho’s team would be well in contention of securing the league title but the record-breaking form of Pep Guardiola’s City team has seen them fall behind in the race for the league title. The Citizens of Manchester are leading the top-flight by a whopping 16 points with the Red Devils desperately trying to play catch up with their local rivals’.
The addition of Evans will undoubtedly bolster Jose Mourinho’s defensive options ahead of the new campaign. The 30-year-old knows the club well after playing for the Red Devils for seven years prior to his move to the Hawthorns. At 30, he still has a few years left to play at the top level which United could look to utilise in the coming years. However, Evans’ form has been inconsistent for the Baggies this season which has led to the club being rooted at the bottom of the league table with just seven matches remaining in this campaign.
It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Evans and whether the Red Devils opts to re-sign him this summer.
