Latest reports are confirming that Jan Oblak is uncertain of his future at Atletico Madrid and may be pondering over committing his future to the club after the end of the current campaign.
“It’s tough to discuss the future,” he said. “It’s not easy to talk about what’s going to happen tomorrow never mind what will happen next season, but I am calm and the situation depends on Atletico – nobody knows the future.”
“There’s nothing new, there have been a lot of things said and written about a new contract but the only confirmed situation is that there is nothing new. I have a contract that I signed two years ago, but now I must wait to see what Atleti’s plan is.”
The most obvious move for Oblak would obviously be to Chelsea. However, Chelsea are not sure about the move as they are only contemplating on bringing Oblak in should Courtois decide to leave West London. The Belgian is yet to sign a contract extension and has done little to quash the rumours about him leaving.
He has been reportedly on Real’s shopping list since Real Madrid president Florentino Perez missed out on Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea. These developments has seen Arsenal enter the foray for Oblak.
The Gunners have an excellent goalkeeper in Petr Cech but with the ex-Chelsea stopper already 35, his time at the club may be coming to an end. It would be wise for Arsenal to bring in a replacement now and allow him time to settle in with Cech around to oversee a smooth transition in goal.
The only factor this would complicate is the career of David Ospina, who would be yet again left at Arsenal as a back up to young Oblak and that might not sit well with the Colombian prompting him to seek a career elsewhere.
Things at the club have not really gone down well in the recent years. The club has been deprived of success in terms of trophies and with major players leaving almost every other transfer window there has been a question on Arsenal’s eligibility as a top European club. Despite such mounting pressure, the club has made a couple of top signings in the last winter transfer window and thereby signalled their intent to make their way back to the top.
Adding Oblak to the list would certainly give the fans reasons to be happy and would actually help the club sort out their goalkeeper issues for a long time to come.
