Swansea City are ready to make a surprise move to bring Sporting CP’s Seydou Doumbia back to the Premier League next summer. According to recent reports, the Swans are eyeing a move for the former Newcastle United winger when the summer transfer window opens at the end of the season.
The Welsh outfit were previously linked with a move for the Ivory Coast international and are now set to rekindle their interest in the player. Some sources have recently claimed that Carlos Carvalhal’s side could face some stiff competition from the likes of FC Basel and Lokomotiv Moscow in pursuit of the Sporting CP ace. The Portuguese club is reportedly looking to part ways with their prized asset this summer which will enable them to get Doumbia’s hefty €2m-a-season wages off their books.
Doumbia has featured in 26 matches for the Bundesliga club this season, scoring 8 goals and creating 2 assists in all competitions. At 30, he still has a few years left at the top level which Swansea City can look to utilise in the coming years. The Ivory Coast forward has a wealth of experience at the top level playing for CSK Moscow, AS Roma, Newcastle United, FC Basel and now, Sporting CP during the course of his career which makes him an ideal addition to the Swans squad ahead of the new campaign.
Swansea City has pulled off a miracle comeback in the Premier League under new manager Carlos Carvalhal and are currently sitting in the 14th place in the Premier League standings following a string of positive results in the league over the past few weeks which include victories over both Liverpool and Arsenal. They are still in danger of getting relegated at the end of the season with just three points separating them from 18th placed Southampton going into the final stretch of the campaign.
The addition of Doumbia will undoubtedly bolster Carlos Carvalhal’s attacking options as they look to secure a top-half finish next season. He has a wealth of experience in European football but his time in English football has been disastrous, to say the least, which will be a cause for concern. Doumbia has had a brief loan spell at Newcastle United but the striker failed to make an impact and made just three substitute appearances before returning to his parent club Roma.
However, there is no doubt about his talent and the Swans can definitely use someone of his goalscoring ability in their frontline. Only time will tell what lies ahead in the future of Doumbia and whether the Welsh outfit are successful in bringing him to the Liberty Stadium in the summer.
