Jose Mourinho has often cut a frustrated figure at Old Trafford but Manchester United are currently in a decent position to qualify for the Champions League next season and can also win the FA Cup. The early UCL exit this season has dampened the spirits at the club and the manager is now desperate to make sure that his side can get through such situations next season.
This has seen the Red Devils linked with a number of star players for various positions but Mourinho seems interested in signing a defender this summer. Tottenham Hotspur’s Toby Alderweireld, Barcelona’s Samuel Umtiti and Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane are all linked with a move to Old Trafford and the latest name added to the list is German star, Jerome Boateng.
A World Cup winner with his national side, the 29-year old spent a year at Etihad, where he lifted the FA Cup, before moving back to Bayern Munich, establishing himself as one of the finest in his trade. He has five Bundesliga titles and a Champions League title and is easily one of the most decorated defenders in the modern game.
He is the first choice for his club and country at the moment but sources close to the player claim that he might be on his way out of the Allianz Arena this summer. The Sun reports that his former club Manchester City, Barcelona and Bayern Munich are all interested in his services along with Manchester United, who are expected to make a bid for him at the end of the season. Is he the right man for the club?
Known for his strength and concentration, the 29-year old has 251 appearances in all competitions for the German giants and has a total of 61 Champions League appearances, and was a part of the UEFA Team of the Year in 2016, after winning the footballer of the year in his country in the same year.
He is right up there with the best and his previous experience in England will also help him to settle in well at United. The Red Devils have no shortage of centre-halves at the moment but the quality is what is frustrating Mourinho. The likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and even Victor Lindelof have not lived up to the expectations, pushing Mourinho into the transfer market searching for a CB for the third consecutive year.
Eric Bailly has been effective for most parts this season and could be the first choice in the next campaign for Mourinho. But is Boateng an able partner for the Ivory Coast international?
