Liverpool are ready to pounce on Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere’s signature if he refuses to extend his stay at the Emirates Stadium beyond this summer. According to recent reports, the Reds are ready to battle it out with Manchester City in pursuit of the England international’s signature when the summer transfer window opens at the end of the season.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are currently monitoring his situation in North London as the Gunners midfield enforcer is embroiled in a contract stand-off with the club after refusing to take a pay cut for his services. Wilshere is prepared to part ways with the Gunners next summer and some sources are now claiming that the North London outfit has told the player that they won’t be offering him an improved contract which has alerted the interest of both Liverpool and Manchester City.
The Reds have already secured the services of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain from the Gunners last summer and could prize Wilshere away from the Emirates Stadium as well in the near future. It is being reported that the 26-year-old wants his future resolved before the end of the current campaign.
The Reds of Anfield are currently sitting in the 3rd position in the Premier League standings after their majestic 5-0 victory over Watford on Saturday. Klopp’s Reds find themselves just above Tottenham Hotspur, who are in the fourth position with points separating the two teams right now.
However, the Merseysiders are humongous 18 points behind league leaders Manchester City going into the final stretch of the campaign. The addition of Wilshere will undoubtedly bolster Jurgen Klopp’s midfield options ahead of the new campaign. Liverpool have the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum, James Milner and Emre Can vying for a place in Klopp’s starting eleven with the impending arrival of Naby Keita from RB Leipzig this summer. The potential signing of Wilshere will definitely add more competition for places in the Reds squad as they look to mount a realistic title challenge next season.
The English midfielder has featured in 26 matches for Arsenal this season, scoring two goals and providing five assists in all competitions. At 26, Wilshere still has his peak years ahead of him which the Merseyside outfit could look to utilise in the coming seasons. It remains to be seen what lies ahead in the future of Wilshere and whether he ends up making a switch to Anfield next summer.
