Newcastle United Ready To Accept Offers For Their Star Player: Is It The Right Decision?

Newcastle United are reportedly willing to listen to big offers for Anthony Gordon. This marks a major shift in how the club view the 24-year-old winger.

According to former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown, the Magpies’ bosses are seriously thinking about cashing in on the England international. Speaking to Football Insider, Brown says senior figures at St James’ Park think Gordon’s price tag is still high. This comes even though his numbers have dropped off during the 2025/26 season.

Gordon played brilliantly in the Champions League group stages earlier this season. However, his Premier League form has fallen off a cliff. He has only put up two goals and one assist in 17 league games.

Brown suggests these numbers have worried the club’s leadership. He points to a growing frustration with the winger’s struggles to finish chances.

Long-term admirers Liverpool and Arsenal are keeping a close eye on the situation. The Gunners see Gordon’s pace as a great fit for their attack. At the same time, Liverpool want him because they need to freshen up their front line.

For Newcastle United, the move is about money just as much as tactics. Selling now means they get the most money possible. They want to move before his contract status or poor form causes his market value to drop.

“Newcastle are leaning towards letting him go. They’re reaching a point now where the potential he has shown is not being fulfilled; he’s still wasteful and lacks the end product they would hope for.

“His goalscoring record is frankly awful, for somebody with his talent, pace and two good feet. His final pass, cross, whatever, has not been of a high enough standard.

“He’s still an important part of their side, but they could look to sell him for a big fee while his stock is still high, and clubs will pay big money. Because if he continues like this, you’re stuck with an underperforming player, and the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal, for example, won’t be interested.

“There are other players out there who could offer more to Newcastle, especially if they had the money from selling Gordon to go and spend. It would help them with any of these PSR or FFP issues they’re still talking about as well, so it’s something they’ll definitely be considering.”

Is Selling Gordon a Gamble Worth Taking?

Newcastle United are prepared to listen to “big” offers for Anthony Gordon as a result of his sudden downturn in performances so far this season.

Letting a fan favourite leave is a huge risk for Eddie Howe. Still, the money side of the Premier League often forces these tough decisions. It is no secret that Newcastle United are struggling to stay within the Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Getting a huge fee for the Englishman, likely more than £60 million, would help the balance sheet immediately. Most importantly, it would give them the cash to fix other weak spots in the squad.

However, the stats show a complicated story. Gordon’s work rate and defensive help are still top-tier. These traits do not always show up in the stats, but they are vital to Howe’s high-pressing style.

Taking away the 24-year-old’s non-stop energy could shake up how the team play. On top of that, selling to a rival like Arsenal or Liverpool could really hurt if Gordon starts scoring again in a new shirt.

The decision comes down to one question. Do the club think his current struggle is just a slump or his actual limit? If the recruitment team finds a better finisher who can guarantee goals, letting Gordon go makes sense.

However, they have to be careful. If they sell him without a clear replacement ready, they might lose their most dangerous player right as the season hits its most important stretch.
