If a recent transfer update from the prominent Uruguayan sports journalist Martin Charquero (as cited by The Scottish Sun) is believed to be true, Celtic are keeping close tabs on Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Laquintana and could snap up the Red Bull Bragantino attacker in the ongoing winter transfer window.

The 26-year-old Uruguay international progressed through the academy ranks of Juventud Unida de Paysandú and Defensor Sporting before breaking into the latter’s senior side in the top-flight of Uruguayan football. He left Defensor for Penarol in August 2021 and continued to flourish in the Primera División. His spell in the homeland earned him a €690k transfer to Red Bull Bragantino in the Brazilian Serie A.

A loan spell with Santos in the second tier helped him attune to the new surroundings. His emergence grabbed Marcelo Bielsa’s attention, as the Celeste boss rewarded him with senior call-ups and eventually the debut against the Dominican Republic in a friendly fixture. Laquintana made the opportunity count by finding the net en route to scripting a 1-0 victory in Malaysia.
Why Celtic Should Give It A Go
Predominantly a right-winger, the attacking ace has often featured from the left as an inverted wide playmaker. He is also effective as a ‘number 10’ for his through balls and creative spark in and around the final third. His relationship with Marcelo Saracchi should streamline the transfer, as the on-loan Celtic left-back wore the Uruguay armband when Laquintana marked his debut with a winner.
The Hoops had a dreadful summer window, as they failed to restore quality following high-profile departures. The board acted late by roping in Sebastian Tounekti and Michel-Ange Balikwisha; however, neither has delivered so far, particularly the latter, who has struggled for minutes, having failed to impress over the past few months.
Meanwhile, Celtic are going through turmoil since Wilfried Nancy took over from Martin O’Neill. His 3-4-2-1 set-up has not worked out yet, as the players, accustomed to a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 for years, have not been able to adapt in these early weeks. The Frenchman needs backing to put his philosophy into practice, and a player of Laquintana’s versatility would slot into the system, either from the flanks or as a midfield attacker. It remains to be seen now whether the Bhoys intensify their interest in due time.
