Previously, in 2020, the Argentina international indicated that he would find it difficult to decline a proposition from Independiente, presumably later in his distinguished playing days. However, his view appears to have shifted a little this past week because he admitted that returning to his former club will now be “very difficult,” especially considering his current stature in the sport.
Martínez also said he is open to possible moves to either Saudi Arabia or the United States. This suggests he is looking beyond Europe for future options. Interestingly, the Aston Villa star’s father, Beto Martínez, offers a different view.
He believes a future Independiente reunion is still possible for his son. TyC Sports interviewed Beto, and Orgullo Rojo later relayed his remarks. This gave some hope to the South American club’s fans. The conversation with Beto occurred around the third anniversary of Argentina’s World Cup victory in December 2022.
Emiliano played a huge part in that triumph. During the interview, journalists naturally inquired about the possibility of the goalkeeper heading back to his initial club. Although Emiliano himself sounded cautious, his father’s words sounded encouraging for Independiente supporters.
Beto explained that Emiliano’s main goal is not to simply join Independiente for a silent retirement. Instead, he wants to return while still able to help the team and win a championship with them. The elder Martínez compared his son’s situation to that of Lionel Messi.
He suggested Emiliano will make that move when the moment feels right. This keeps hopes alive for Independiente fans. “What he doesn’t want is to come to Independiente to retire; he wants to come back and win the championship. He doesn’t want to arrive ruined. That’s what he told me,” he said.
“This is like Messi, whether he’s going to play in the World Cup or not; he’ll feel good about it, and it’ll happen. Then things happen, he has a family, you don’t know what might happen. But I know that if Emi wants to come back, he’ll come back well,” added his father.
Why do Aston Villa have to cash in on him?
Ultimately, Aston Villa must seriously consider selling the Argentine this summer to take advantage of his high value right now. He is nearing the age where a major transfer fee becomes unlikely for a goalkeeper. That money could help the club invest in other areas.
