Fresh speculation surrounds the Real Madrid squad. Defensa Central reports that AC Milan are targeting Andriy Lunin for a potential summer transfer. This interest arises because the Italian giants are having a hard time renewing Mike Maignan’s contract.
AC Milan target Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin
So, they have shortlisted the Ukrainian international as their main backup plan. Lunin signed a contract extension keeping him at the Santiago Bernabéu until 2030. Even so, the Rossoneri are keeping a close eye on him while talks with their current French shot-stopper remain at a standstill.
Milan reportedly gave Maignan a final “take it or leave it” offer of €7 million per season. He is still on the fence about these terms. This holdup is forcing the club to look for new options right away.
If Maignan departs, Milan executives intend to bid between €10 million and €15 million for Lunin. They feel this price makes sense for a keeper with his background and European experience.
Real Madrid maintain a strict policy regarding winter transfers. The club hierarchy has ruled out any sales during the upcoming window, other than Endrick’s loan to Lyon. So, the club won’t even talk about a deal for the goalkeeper until the season is over.
Lunin turned down offers from Turkish clubs last summer to fight for his place. However, getting to start every week at the San Siro might change his mind. The 26-year-old is currently the backup to Thibaut Courtois. Moving for good in 2026 would give him the consistent minutes he has looking for during his prime years. Manchester United also wanted to sign Lunin in the summer. So, there won’t be any shortage of suitors.
Why Real Madrid must demand more or retain Lunin?

Lunin showed what he could do while filling in for the injured Courtois. He proved he has the reflexes and cool head needed for the highest level of football. The Ukrainian bailed out Real Madrid plenty of times, including in huge Champions League knockout games. Those performances made his value skyrocket across Europe.
The rumoured price of €10 million to €15 million seems way too low. Lunin was basically the backbone of a Champions League-winning defence for most of the 2023/24 season. Los Blancos really should ask for a lot more if they decide to sell. If not, they need to focus on keeping him as the best possible safety net in case Courtois gets injured again.
Selling him for such a small fee would be a huge headache. It’s almost impossible to find another backup this good for that kind of money in today’s market. Keeping a keeper who wants to be number one isn’t easy, but Xabi Alonso values squad depth above all else.
Real Madrid have to compare the cash against the risk on the pitch. It would be a strategic error to let a talent like Lunin leave for cheap. Madrid should keep their man unless Milan come back with a much better offer. Having two world-class goalkeepers brings a level of stability that money rarely buys.
