Rangers Eyeing Move For This Spanish Centre-back: Why He Would Bolster Rohl’s Backline

If a recent update from transfer expert Sacha Tavolieri is believed to be true, Rangers are keeping close tabs on Mujaid Sadick ahead of a potential winter move. Their defensive frailties have cost them so far across competitions, and the Genk centre-half could be brought in to find a solution to their ongoing conundrum.

The 25-year-old former Spanish youth international progressed through Deportivo La Coruña’s academy ranks and impressed for their reserves in the lower leagues. He was eventually promoted to their senior squad in 2018, and after more than 55 appearances for the Brancoazuis, the Belgian outfit snapped him up for €1.70m in the summer of 2021.

Sadick made significant strides over the years in the heart of the backline with his physicality, strong tackling traits and concentration. His ability to play it out from the back, along with the passing expertise, should see him fit in Danny Rohl’s system. The German gaffer has switched to a ‘back three’ in recent games, and the Spaniard’s flexibility would help him implement tactical transitions from deep defence.

Why Rangers Must Snap Him Up

The Gers went through a squad overhaul in the summer under sporting director Kevin Thelwell. He brought in Russell Martin as the new Ibrox boss, and the pair snapped up Nasser Djiga, Manny Fernandez and Derek Cornelius among the central defensive options. Fernandez has hardly been involved since joining from Peterborough United, whereas Djiga and Cornelius have yet to live up to expectations despite joining from Wolves and Marseille, respectively.

Defence has been a concern for the Light Blues for a while, with Robin Propper, Neraysho Kasanwirjo and Rafael Fernandes failing to impress last season. 37-year-old Leon Balogun was not handed a contract extension. Also, young Clinton Nsiala does not seem to have a future after being frozen out of the first-team picture. Martin’s dismissal did not change much, primarily because of the mediocrity of their summer signings.

Yet Rohl’s style of play has brought positivity to their game. The board must now back him with quality over quantity in the upcoming windows, and Sadick, having proved his worth over the years in one of the most renowned leagues, should bolster Rangers in their battle for revival. He would slot in down the right of a three-man backline, as well as centrally, ahead of John Souttar or Cornelius. It won’t be a straightforward deal for the club, given the player’s profile and current status in European football.
