Matteo Guendouzi faces an uncertain future at Lazio as financial pressure forces the Italian club to consider player sales. Corriere dello Sport via Sport Witness reports that both Newcastle United and Sunderland have shown strong interest in the 26-year-old midfielder.
Newcastle United want to sign Matteo Guendouzi
He arrived from Marseille in 2023, initially on loan, but Lazio quickly made the move permanent after consistent displays. Across 48 appearances last season, the Frenchman contributed six goals and played a pivotal role in their campaign. However, despite starting most league fixtures this term and adding two more goal involvements, his form has tailed off.

Maurizio Sarri’s 4-3-3 system hasn’t suited the 26-year-old’s traits, and although the manager would rather keep him, the club’s financial state could force a sale. Lazio would prefer to wait until the summer window, but they remain ready to listen to winter offers if clubs match their expectations, estimated at around €25–30 million. Meanwhile, some reports have even claimed that Newcastle United are planning to sign Allan Elias.
Do the Magpies need him?
When evaluating whether Newcastle should move for him, they must consider it level-headedly. Their midfield often lacks balance and presence, especially in matches where they lose control under pressure. Bringing Guendouzi back to the Premier League could help solve that problem since he adds energy and positional discipline, and he brings top-flight experience from his Arsenal days.
Even so, the Lazio midfielder’s recent struggles show he might need some time to settle again. The Magpies need someone who makes an instant impact, not a player who grows into it, and with their inconsistency, they can’t afford another slow adjustment.
He matches what they’re looking for, but not the urgency of what they need right now. At this stage, Newcastle United should look at alternatives that offer more certainty from the start, even though his upside is still appealing.
