In a recent newsletter with Give Me Sport, renowned journalist Fabrizio Romano claimed that Manchester United have identified Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes. Romano said,
“He’s one of the names under consideration, not the only one. Man United have several midfielders on their shortlist.”
Gomes’ Decent Season In The Premier League
Gomes has enjoyed a good run of form at the Midlands club in this campaign as he has been responsible for producing a run of impressive performances for them in the middle of the park. The 24-year-old has played in 12 league matches for Wolves this season but has failed to score or create a goal for them across all fronts.
The Brazilian sensation has offered decent protection for his teammates at the back and deserves credit for making 31 tackles, 14 blocks, 11 interceptions and 21 clearances in the Premier League. He has even distributed the ball accurately from midfield, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 84.2% in the English top tier (stats via fbref.com).

What Will Gomes Bring To Manchester United?
Gomes is a tough-tackling midfielder who can sense the danger well to secure the ball back for his team inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the front foot and is a good passer of the ball as well. Gomes is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also serve as a holding midfielder if required.
The Brazilian talent is already quite familiar with the Premier League and won’t take much time to adjust to life at the Mancunian club. However, there are some concerns over whether he can cope with the high expectations surrounding a move to Man United.
Gomes would no doubt bring more quality to Ruben Amorim’s midfield department. He has what it takes to fight for a regular first-team spot at Old Trafford in the coming years.
At 24, Gomes has his peak years ahead of him, which makes him a worthy target for the Red Devils to pursue this winter or at the end of this campaign. Furthermore, he would serve as a good successor to Casemiro at the Mancunian club. Thus, Amorim should focus on trying everything in his power to lure Gomes to the Theatre of Dreams next year.
