Leeds United Set To Reignite Interest In This Irish Sensation: Why He Should Solve Their Crisis

If a report from the Dutch outlet VoetbalNieuws is believed to be true, Leeds United are expected to reignite interest in Troy Parrott to resolve their crisis high up the pitch. The Whites opted not to meet AZ Alkmaar’s €30m asking fee in the summer, but the current conundrum might see them return with an even higher offer for the high-flying hitman.

The 23-year-old Republic of Ireland international left his boyhood club, Belvedere and joined the academy ranks of Tottenham Hotspur. He made strides for the reserves and grabbed four first-team appearances during the 2019-20 season. Spurs sent him out on loan for regular minutes; however, the youngster failed to fulfil his potential with Millwall, Ipswich Town, MK Dons and Preston North End in the lower divisions of the English pyramid.

The Rise For Club And The Country

Parrott tried his luck in the Netherlands with Excelsior and netted 17 goals across competitions. He could not help them escape relegation, but the impressive season-long loan saw AZ make a €8m move in the summer of 2024. The Irishman, surplus to requirements under Ange Postecoglou, was offloaded permanently ahead of the 2024-25 season.

The low-key signing of the young ‘number 9’ proved to be a masterstroke by the Cheese Farmers. Parrott netted 20 goals in his maiden campaign and has already fired in 13 times in 14 appearances so far this season. Moreover, he stepped up for his nation amid Evan Ferguson’s injury absence. His brace against Portugal, followed by an incredible last-gasp winner to score a hat-trick against Hungary, guided The Boys in Green to script a miraculous comeback and qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs.

Why Leeds United Must Snap Him Up

Leeds United reclaimed their Premier League status by clinching the Championship title. But they have struggled for goals, having scored only 10 times in 11 games. They are just a point above the relegation zone, and Daniel Farke, therefore, must turn things around before it gets too late. His dreadful top-flight record remains a concern, and the lack of productivity up top has not helped the German either.

The Whites snapped up several new names in the summer but decided against splashing the cash for centre-forwards. Instead, they brought both Lukas Nmecha and Dominic Calvert-Lewin on Bosman, and the pair have only netted thrice while spearheading the attack.

Despite winning the Golden Boot in the Championship, Joel Piroe has failed to attune to the grind and demands of the Premier League. He has slipped down the pecking order behind Nmecha and Calvert-Lewin, and it remains to be seen whether the red-hot Irishman drags them out of misery.
