According to a report by Spanish journalist Jorge C Picon, Chelsea are keen on signing a goalkeeper in the upcoming transfer window. The Premier League club have identified Real Madrid‘s Fran Gonzalez as a viable target.
Who is Fran Gonzalez?
Fran Gonzalez is a bright talent who joined Real Madrid in July 2022. Since then he has made good progress as an individual. He plays for the reserve side of the Spanish club and could break into the senior side really soon.
Gonzalez has turned up 10 times for Real Madrid Castilla to date. In those many features, he has managed to keep one clean sheet while conceding 12 goals.
The Spanish goalkeeper is tall, agile, and brave when it comes to commanding his area. He has quick reflexes, long reach, and strong hands. He reads the threats really well and remains calm under pressure, showcasing his confident character.
Strange from Chelsea
Chelsea’s interest in Fran Gonzalez is surprising considering the fact that the club already have notable goalkeepers at their disposal. On top of that, they signed Filip Jorgensen and Mike Penders in the summer transfer window.
Hence, it’s quite tough to understand why the Blues want another shot-stopper in their squad. They were recently also linked with Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher. Ideally, they should look to invest money in bolstering other areas rather than wasting resources here and there.
Keeping Chelsea’s perspective aside, Real Madrid are unlikely to entertain such interests. The Spanish club already have high hopes for Gonzalez. With Thibaut Courtois already 32 years old, the 19-year-old could prove to be a long-term replacement.
It will be interesting to see what will be Gonzalez’s approach whether he would like to stay in Madrid and try creating a legacy for himself or entertain a move to explore other options.
