In a recent report, The Athletic’s Chris Waugh offered an update on the future of Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff. It has been stated that the Magpies could consider letting the English midfield ace leave in the January transfer window.
Longstaff’s Impressive Form In English Football
Longstaff has served as an important member of Eddie Howe’s match-day squad during this campaign and has managed to put in a few influential displays for Newcastle in the Premier League. The English talent has been involved in eight matches for the Magpies this season but has failed to score or create a goal for them in multiple competitions.
The 26-year-old has anchored the midfield with conviction based on his average of 1.8 tackles, 0.7 interceptions and 0.5 clearances per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He was even been tidy when distributing possession from midfield after completing 85.6% of his attempted passes in the English top flight (stats via whoscored).
His current deal at the Tyneside club will run out at the end of this campaign. Thus, it is only logical for Newcastle to try and cash in on him this January or risk losing him on a free transfer next summer.
Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Cash In On Longstaff?
Longstaff loves a tackle and can sense the danger well to secure the ball back for his side inside his half. He usually clears his lines when the opposition are on the offensive and is an accurate passer of the ball as well. However, the English talent needs to find a way to improve his productivity in the final third.
Longstaff is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also serve as a holding midfielder if told to do so. He remains an important member of Eddie Howe’s midfield department and could help the Magpies compete across all fronts this season.
At 26, Longstaff has his peak years ahead of him. However, he is on an expiring contract at St. James’ Park. Thus, it makes sense for Howe to cash in on him when the transfer reopens at the start of next year. Furthermore, the Magpies could use the money generated from his potential sale to find a suitable replacement this winter.
