In a recent report, journalist Graeme Bailey claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are facing tough competition for Red Star Belgrade prospect Andrija Maksimovic. It has been stated that Spurs would have to rival Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle United among other top clubs from Europe in pursuit of the Serbian whizkid.
Maksimovic’s Impressive Rise In Serbia
Maksimovic has come through the youth ranks of Red Star and has done well to break out as a first-team starter for them recently. The Serbian attacker has already made nine appearances for his current club this season, picking up a couple of assists in all competitions.
The 17-year-old has caught the eye at times with his performances in Europe based on his average of 2.0 shots and 0.5 dribbles per 90 minutes in the UEFA Champions League. He has even been tidy when distributing the ball in the final third, as evidenced by his pass completion rate of 91.7% in European football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Serbian club will expire in the summer of 2027 which could make it difficult for Tottenham to get a deal done for him on the cheap next year.
Tottenham Hotspur Are Facing Tough Competition For Maksimovic: Is He Worth The Fight?
Maksimovic can find a yard of space for himself to get some strikes in at goal. He is a pure striker of the ball and can create the odd chance for his teammates in the final third.
The Serbian youngster is a good dribbler with the ball as well. He is primarily an attacking midfielder but can also serve as a box-to-box midfielder or as a right-sided wide player if asked to do so.
Maksimovic is already good enough to play as a decent, rotational piece in Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglu’s squad. However, he might need some time to adapt to the physical nature and high intensity of the Premier League if Spurs manage to secure his services next year.
At 17, Maksimovic has the potential to be a future star in English football. Therefore, he would be well worth the fight. All in all, the North London club would be wise to try everything they can to win the race for him this January or next summer.
